Cemex applies for quarry zoning

Take a stand
or own a wasteland!

We are urging all our neighbors to show up in full force to oppose the rezoning of several parcels of land owned by CEMEX. The land is located along the west side of West Enon Road and south of West Hyde Road—289.7 acres. Rezoning of this land from agriculture to M-3 Mineral Extraction (mining) will mean that CEMEX will expand its already existing operations even closer to your backyard.

A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD ON THIS APPLICATION BY THE XENIA TOWNSHIP ZONING COMMISION DATE: JUNE 16, 2011 TIME: 6:00PM PLACE: Xenia Township Trustees Office at 8 Brush Row Road, Xenia, Ohio.

Please take a few minutes to write to the commission opposing the zoning change. For the greatest effect, your letter should be delivered to the commission in person. It should include (1) your name and street address, (2) your list of reasons for opposing the rezoning. Here are some issues that involve mining operations to get you started:
  • The value of our homes and properties will be dramatically and negatively affected by another open-pit mine in our community.
  • While it is unlikely that property taxes will be decreased as a result of the rezoning, our property values will decline considerably.
  • The aesthetics of the now beautiful and beneficial tract with adjoining woods will be completely decimated.
  • Mining will dramatically and negatively affect the local water table, which is already in decline.
  • Mining will increase noise pollution from blasting, manufacturing activities, and heavy truck traffic.
  • Mining will create visible and hazardous rock dust and cause earthquake-like tremors.
  • Mining will increase the amount of dangerous truck traffic on our roads.
  • Our ability to resell our homes and properties will be severely limited if not nonexistent.
  • A beneficial wildlife habitat will be completely destroyed.
  • Air pollutants commonly emitted from cement manufacturing plants include: Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrous Oxide (NOx).
Other considerations:
Recent fines levied against CEMEX by the EPA demonstrate the company’s questionable track record with environmental issues.

Dust and other pollutants extend further than just the immediate neighborhood. Inform your friends and neighbors!

If you cannot deliver your letter in person, here is the mailing address: Xenia Township Zoning Commission at 8 Brush Row Road, Xenia, Ohio 45385, attn: Rhonda Painter, Zoning Clerk. Refer to Case#R11-01. Allow ample time for your letter to arrive well before the hearing.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or ideas! Call Pete Waltz at 937-287-6784, your neighbor at 790 W Hyde Rd. peteywaltz@yahoo.com; I am also on Facebook: peteywaltz@facebook.com.

SAY “NO” TO QUARRY
END OF STORY!

Please visit the X-TAG.ORG web site to get more information on this subject and thanks to the Green Environmental Coalition (greenlink.org) for their support and commitment.
CEMEX has tried this in the past and here we go again! CEMEX displays persistence and determination in having their way in this community. We need to be persistent and determined, too!

Let me know if you are interested in getting to the commission meeting early for picketing. Also important: Does anyone still have your old signs stating, “Farms Yes Quarry No”? If so, let’s get them out for everybody to see.
