Ohio Writing Center Consortium Conference Hosted at Antioch University McGregor

The Robert Dizney Writing Center of Antioch University McGregor hosted the Ohio Writing Center Consortium (OWCC) conference on Friday, February 19th, 2010. The purpose of the OWCC is to provide support for writing centers across Ohio. Nearly 40 writing center directors and writing tutors participate in the biannual meeting. ‘The vision of the Robert Dizney Writing Center is to enable our students to become better communicators,’ said Antioch University McGregor president, Dr. Michael Fishbein. ‘In collaboration with the OWCC, we’re thrilled to see so much participation across all of Ohio.’

Ms. Julie Moore, Associate Professor of Language and Literature, delivered the keynote address. Her experiences as director of the Cedarville University writing center have shown her the importance of tutoring students across disciplines. She compiled an index of requirements and procedures for all academic disciplines, and shared with OWCC members how they might bring the same organization to their own writing centers.

Ms. Christina Klimo from the University of Dayton shared data collected previously from OWCC members regarding consultant training and procedures. Antioch University McGregor writing tutor Alex Blosser led a discussion on web-based tutoring hazards and benefits. And Sharon Short of the Antioch Writers’ Workshop provided an overview of the annual summer writers’ retreat to be held at Antioch University McGregor July 9-16, 2010. Julie Moore is also a wonderful poet. I had the pleasure of getting to know her while I was AWW director. You can read a few of her poems here: www.julielmoore.com/poems.html
