The Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs is hosting a free screening of the documentary "Coal Country" on Saturday, March 20th at 4PM. The film is from acclaimed documentary filmmakers Mari-Lynn Evans and Phyllis Geller, who previously created the PBS series "The Appalachians." "Coal Country" focuses on the practice of 'Mountain Top Removal' (MTR), where over 450 of the ancient Appalachian peaks have been exploded and leveled to access the veins of coal beneath, which are then used towards fueling our country's electrical power.
"Coal Country" vividly portrays both the environmental effects and the human toll of the controversial method of MTR, particularly to the local communities whose homes, health and livelihood are at stake.
Admission is free, however, donations are welcome to cover the theatre's operating cost. Any surplus will be given to the non-profit group Appalachian Voices.
