Nightmare On Shelf 2
Have you taken a good look at what’s in your refrigerator lately – it could be scary. The Wall St. Journal had an ooze-filled piece on American’s lack of refrigerator management. Most of the time, the article says, we only clean our refrigerator once or twice a year, and only 33% of those surveyed clean things out before going grocery shopping rather than just jamming things in front when they get home. Imagine that!
The WSJ article and the recent blog piece on “Anarchy in the Kitchen” got me thinking that maybe it was time to see what I had in the far corners of our refrigerator.
With the appropriate hazmat suit, a flashlight, and garbage bags ready, I start through the shelves to discover those fuzzy things that are emerald green, deep blue and lava red - almost iridescent when first uncovered. Fuzzy things are interesting and colorful but I think first prize this time goes to the slow leak from an overturned carton of buttermilk that made its way to every shelf in the refrigerator. Since this is a family blog site, I won’t go into the details.
During my excavation, I could hear the chef in the background “Are you sure it’s bad” and “Well, at least save the container”. Are you kidding me? I have to open this stuff and turn it loose in the sink? I make a big show of saving a couple of the glass jars but there’s not a chance I’m opening anything that might have movement inside.
When everything is cleaned up and out of the house, I decide it’s safe to ask “What’s for dinner?” The chef’s response is “I don’t know. Get two jars of something out of the freezer.” I realize, warily, that we’re having two jar soup tonight. Please, let me pick wisely. Maybe I should take on the freezer next weekend….
