Dance Piazza 2011

A la Piazza del Corry

You and yours are invited to an outdoor international dance party on Saturday, May 21, from 7-10 p.m. at the landscaped “piazza” or plaza at 100 Corry Street in Yellow Springs (aka “Art Park”). This event is part of the Yellow Springs Third Weekend Fling.

This event is free and open to all ages. There are plenty of benches and places to sit and listen if you just want to watch. Your presence is welcome!

From 7-8 p.m., each “Dance Piazza” will feature a different dance or musical performer, encouraging audience participation through a brief demonstration. This week's featured performers will be Yellow Springs' own Marta Mari-Crocker and Dayton's Deniz of the Sandstorm Dancers. The two dancers will be performing and teaching Middle Eastern Belly Dance in the 1st hour, 7-8 p.m. Then, from 8-10 p.m., I will spin Latin dance tunes along with other world & American dance music including Afro-beat, Bhangra, Middle Eastern, club, old-school R&B, and more.

A piazza is defined as “a public square or marketplace, especially in an Italian town.” Although Yellow Springs is neither in Italy nor has a public square, the event creators, myself ("DJ JuJu") and Marybeth Turner, wish to recreate the kind of outdoor festivities that can be found throughout piazzas in Italy and plazas in Latin America in the summer months.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase during the Dance Piazza at two local stands, Brother Bear’s Coffeehouse and Willie’s Wiener Wagon (meat and vegetarian hot dogs).
