At their September meeting, the trustees of the Yellow Springs Community Foundation (YSCF) voted to award three Saul Young Grants in the amount of $300.00 each in honor of community members who exhibited community spirit by going above and beyond to make our village a better place to live. Saul Young grants are given in recognition of service to the Yellow Springs and Miami Township community. They are initiated by the YSCF Board and cannot be applied for. Formerly called mini-grants, they were renamed in 2006 to honor the memory of Saul Young, a long-time trustee and chair of the Grants Review Committee, who served the community in so many ways.
Jimmy Chesire:
A grant will be made to the local nonprofit of Jimmy's choice upon his retirement after 25 years of running the T-Ball league. The grant is in recognition of his dedication and service to the children of Yellow Springs through his long involvement with the Perry League.
Karen Wintrow:
A grant was made to the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce in recognition of the dedication and hard work of Chamber Director Karen Wintrow on behalf of our community. The trustees are especially appreciative of the way she has brought together the arts and business communities to stage a constant array of events and make the Village of Yellow Springs a destination for those who want to do something exciting and different.
The children who bike to Mills Lawn School:
A grant was made to Mills Lawn School in honor of those students who are biking to school as a result of the reductions in school bus service. The YSCF trustees want them to know that, in their way, the kids who bike are contributing to the sustainability of our schools and helping the environment. It is the intention of the trustees that the money go toward school bike racks in some way, perhaps to build a cover to keep the bikes dry when it rains. Not wanting to impose any extra burden on MLS to come up with additional funds to effectuate improvements or additions to bike parking at the school, they have given the school the option to not accept the money.

What a wonderful idea to honor Saul Young in such a manner. When I was the secretary of the YSCF I was always impressed by his leadership of the grants committee. He was always tough but fair. He gave everyone a chance, but didn't get swept away into recommending a badly thought-out proposal. Saul left us way too soon.
