Several weeks ago a few Village folks started working to change the Sunday alcohol sales restrictions for precinct 442, which includes most of the downtown business district. By collecting 250+ signatures from people who live in the 442 area, the proposal did make the ballot for Nov. 3rd. If approved, the change would primarily affect four restaurants (The Winds, Peaches, Sunrise and the Tavern) that currently have liquor licenses but can't sell for "on-premise consumption" on Sundays.
The Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce supports this change and recommends a vote "FOR" changing the alcohol restrictions in order to permit the sale of wine and mixed drinks on Sunday after 1PM.. This change directly supports four of our major downtown businesses.

Passing this ballot issue will also affect the vast number of 501(c)3 organizations or non-profits that want to hold events on Sundays and would like to offer wine and/or cocktails. Up to now this has been prohibited.
It also will allow wine and cocktail sales on New Year's Eve should that occur on a Sunday (like it will in a few years.
The law is a leftover from the days when no beverage alcohol could be sold on Sundays in Ohio. Sunday sales were first allowed in Ohio starting in the 1970's leaving Sunday sales up to local discretion. Someone a while back pushed through Sunday sales of beer served anywhere and wine sales only in a retail store, but not wine or cocktails served in a restaurant or bar. This issue will fix that and allow for all.
