“How the University Works” discussion with Marc Bousquet

Thursday, May 13 — 8 PM at Nonstop

This is the fourth in a series of video conferences on higher education issues.

Noted author, teacher and activist, Professor Marc Bousquet joins Nonstop for a live video teleconference discussion drawing from his ongoing work regarding academic labor and his 2008 book, How the University Works: Higher Education and the Low-Wage Nation.

Bousquet insists on a broader critical view of the university and our contemporary culture, questioning misleading presumptions about divisions of labor and academic activity as discrete categories as well as challenging common suppositions about how these activities would supposedly contribute to institutional purpose. Rather than simply being overwhelmed by our experiences of individual frustration, he urges us to train our attention toward resisting and reversing systemic conditions of exploitation.

Along with his scholarly inquiry, Bousquet has been a consistent supporter of graduate student workers’ unionization efforts. He likewise embraces an ongoing commitment to participatory culture with an eye toward the advancement of democratic educational possibility.

Please join us in welcoming Professor Bousquet for this fourth event of Nonstop’s Higher Education Dialogues videoconference series on May 13 at 8 p.m. This event is free of charge. As a charitable tax-exempt non-profit organization, Nonstop welcomes donations. For more information contact dan.reyes@nonstopinstitute.org
