Sprightly seniors celebrate 50th

Elder Voices Out Loud and Proud

The Senior Citizens celebrated 50 years of service to Yellow Springs by throwing a party/talent show for the village last night. Calling it a "showcase of elder talent" belied the youthful energy that went into every aspect of the production, especially the performances.

Bill Mullins serenaded wife Shirley during part of their trumpet duet.

Jim Felder crooned a love tune.

Mark Crockett and Friends got down and bluesy.

The buzzards sang barbershop quartet with a quintet.

The Madrigals performed an original piece by Kitty Jensen.

Others on the program were Janeal Ravendal, poet; Jim Rose, puppeteer; Julie Sine, singer; Shirley Wexler, violinist; Charles Scott, singer; Yvonne Seon, poet; Flo Lorenz, actress (reading); and Mitzi Manny and Kevin Kelbie accompanying a sing-a-long on accordion and piano. Walter Rhodes MC'd the event interspersing his comments with a number of corny jokes.

You are correct in writing that the Senior Center has served Yellow Springs and Miami Township for 50 years. 1959-2009. But the "Elder Voices Out Loud and Proud" showcase of elder talent presented Friday, June 26th at Mills Lawn Auditorium was a GIFT to the community for its SUPPORT for 50 years. There was no admission charge and 230 people accepted our gift. They were most generous with their praise for a lovely evenng which culminated with a challenge: Can we raise $40,000 for this year's Annual Appeal fund drive? The audience answered with a resounding, "Yes, we can!" Nearly 1000 hand addressed Appeal letters were mailed on Monday June 29th and the return began immediately. We seniors are truly grateful for your continued support. Susan Bee
