The Yellow Springs Community Band has traditionally held a concert on the Friday evening before Street Fair. And the First Presbyterian Church has traditionally kicked off its Strawberry Festival on the same night. The concert has usually been performed blocks away from the church in Kings Yard, except when it rained and it was then held in the Mills Lawn gym. Common wisdom had it that the twain would never meet. Then two things happened: James Johnston simultaneously took the positions of music director at the church and director of the Community Band, and the church cut down its massive hedge, making more room on its front lawn.
The band, weather permitting, will set up on the church's front lawn and the concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. In addition to delicious strawberry treats, diners will be treated to an eclectic musical menu ranging from Vivaldi to Sousa to Cole Porter. The full program will be posted on the Blog later in the week.
If it rains, and according to the weather gurus at Channel 7 that is not likely, the concert will be moved into the MLS gym just across Walnut Street.
The Strawberry Festival at the First Presbyterian Church will run from 6-9 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. during Street Fair on Saturday.
