Breaking News: Village about to take another big economic hit

According to a reliable source, the University Family Health Center - Wright State Physicians at 1001 Xenia Avenue between Marshall and Herman Streets is planning to close down and move its operations to Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia.

The Yellow Springs facility provides more than 13,000 outpatient visits annually and serves as a rural training site for more than half of Wright State med students, according to the Wright State University Medical School Website.

Calls made this morning (6/12) to both the main office of Wright State Physicians in Dayton and the Yellow Springs clinic were not returned by the end of the day.

Is this really a "big economic hit"? How many people work there? Are any Yellow Springs residents?

I would think so a bit Les, these patients might have lunch at Sunrise, get a pizza to go from Ha Ha's, do a bit of shopping for gifts at Earth Rose...etc.. after their visit, or training day.

...and they might even get a script filled at Towne Drug, and drink and gas after..not to metion the employee's who work in town.

Not sure how big an impact, but as others have said, patients and staff won't be here buying services etc. What about tax and utility costs? I hate to see a support service like this go :( even if it isn't a huge economic impact.

Yes, the impact on local patients is at least as big a story as the economic impact.

Don't a lot of seniors use that health center? I would think if they do now they have to have transport arranged to go out of town, not as convenient, and it costs gas money to go to xenia. :(

The impact will be the loss of income taxes from the staff wh work there being paid...many of which are high paying jobs. It won't be peanuts.

Who knows what the University will do with the property. Will it be just another aging empty building?

I've heard thru reliable sources that the move to GMH may just be temporary while they construct a new building or undertake a major renovation. A Vandalia construction company recently submitted a bid for work at this location....so hopefully this is the case!

My source tells me that the move was necessitated by the condition of the building, in particular, heating and air-conditioning. Word is that it is going to be torn down. That doesn't make any sense to me. Why not try to rent it out, unless you are planning new construction. So hopefully you are right.

I also heard from an insider that the plan is to rapidly REPLACE the building, and get back to serving the community and area. One more rumer doesn't make it true, but should add some confidence in the outcome.
