Why Greene County is faring better than Montgomery in the recession

Reading the local unemployment figures for the region in recent times, I always assume that Greene County seems to be making out better than its neigbor to the west, because Montgomery County is industrialized and, therefore, losing jobs, and Greene still has a lot of agriculture and is more stable. I think that's still a fair assumption. However, Cathy Young of the Greene County Convention and Visitors Bureau got me to thinking about some other factors in her presentation to the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce at this afternoon.

There's a big car show going on at the Nutter Center this weekend. A lot of the participants, who hail from all over the world, are asking about Yellow Springs, Young said. Springs Motel owner Eric Clark confirmed that his parking lot looks like a mini version of the car show from the participants that are staying there.

Good for Yellow Springs! Good for the County, too! Hotel revenues are up in Greene, down in Montgomery.

As she went on, I began to realize that the GCCVB has a lot to work with. She ticked off the list: Wright Patt, the Airforce Museum, Wright State, the Nutter Center, Clifton Gorge, John Bryan State Park, Glen Helen, the bike paths, and Yellow Springs - YS being the biggest. As if to offer further proof of the importance of our village to the county's effort to attract tourism and economic development, Young displayed a number of posters that promote the county by featuring scenes from Yellow Springs.

As they used to say in the Shake 'n Bake ad on TV, "...and we helped!"
