Some innovators in Wooster Ohio are changing how we think about local foods in many ways. Join Tecumseh Land Trust for another event in our Year in Local Foods series. On October 15th we will spend the day in Wooster touring three of their innovative local food endeavors.
The first stop will be at Local Roots Market & Café. This hybrid farmers’ market/coop/café/community kitchen is drawing statewide attention for its unique partnerships and mission. We’ll have lunch in the café and learn from the founders how this project was started. They will touch on the barriers to creating this market and provide great insights on developing a similar local foods marketplace in your neighborhood.
Next stop will be the OSU OARDC research plots with Joe Kovach. Mr. Kovach has been researching various types of polyculture plots that are ideal for urban/small-scale farming. The idea behind the plots is to grow various species that allow for minimal pest damage and maximum yields.
Finally, we’ll look at Mr. Kovach’s newest study on community/urban gardening where he is turning abandoned parking lots into community gardens. Mr. Kovach is experimenting with the best way to utilize these vacant properties to grow healthy food for communities.
The trip will leave from the Bryan Center, 100 Dayton Street, Yellow Springs at 8:30am on October 15. We will return to Yellow Springs around 6:30pm. Please register for this event by calling 767-9490 or emailing krista@tecumsehlandtrust.org. The event is free, but we’ll need a few volunteers to drive.
