Two Alarm Fire Damages Miami Township Home

A late afternoon fire on Sunday caused heavy damage to a Miami Township home just north of Cedarville. Miami Township Fire-Rescue & Cedarville Township Fire Department units were dispatched to 3922 Kyle Road at 3:36 PM Sunday.

The fire went to two alarms, bringing mutual aid units from Hustead, Pitchin, Xenia Township and Springfield Township fire departments. Firefighters initially made entry into the home, but were evacuated when the roof began to collapse. Over 30 personnel from the six departments fought the fire for three hours before bringing it under control.

The 2058 square foot brick house was built in 1868. The cause of the fire remains under investigation; however, the occupants reported hearing an explosion from the area of a chimney prior to the fire. The fire then spread quickly throughout the 2-story, wood frame home. The building is owned by Mark Dutenhaver; he and his family were outside when the fire began and quickly called 911.

Damage to the structure and its contents was extensive. Initial estimates put the dollar loss at close to $125,000. One firefighter received minor injuries during the fire.
