On the question, "Would you favor a land swap between Friends Care and the Village, exchanging the Barr Property for Beatty-Hughes Park?" 82 readers voted "yes," 16 readers voted "no," and 5 readers voted "undecided." Thank you for your participation in the poll and your insightful comments. The 103 votes the poll received is a new record for a Blog poll. I think the five-to-one ratio in favor of the idea is significant. However, the reality is, even if the Village and FCC would agree to it, there is no money to do anything either on the part of the Village, the Historical society, or Friends Care.
My personal opinion is that, while I favor the land swap and I believe the legal obstacles could be overcome, the cost of sustaining the Barr house and land as a public park without an endowment large enough to support it would be prohibitive and fundraising in these times, especially with competing interests right here in the village, would be extremely difficult.
