Woman’s Park In Early Summer

The Woman’s Park is poised for full-bloom in just a few weeks, and the growth is the best we’ve seen due to good rains in the spring. Our work force of volunteers is dedicated, and we are really seeing the results of having so much help early in the year on our Tuesday mornings. Our crew of the Greene County Master Gardeners, villagers, and interested gardeners have been pulling bindweed and other weeds, spreading mulch, and transplanting new sprouts.

The old railroad bed under the park doesn’t have the best soil, but over the years we have continued to improve it. Enoch’s Tree Service donated a load of good mulch to improve our soil and protect new roots. The Burly Man dug out the diseased roses early in the spring to give us a head start on replanting behind the sculpture. It is indeed a community project and we are pleased to have good support from businesses.

At some point this summer or early fall we will be adding over 120 new tiles that honor women in this unique park. Evelyn LaMers is working on the lettering for the new tiles and will soon be firing them. The new pod will be next to the current ones on the northeast side.

We encourage everyone to take a few moments to wander among the echinachea, baptisia, and monarda and to watch the birds and butterflies enjoying the feast that this native landscape provides. You will marvel at the tenacity of the native prairie grasses, the ability of the native plants to survive dry times, and their reliability to return each year without fail. It is truly a beautiful area.
