Drawing and Writing in Nature with Julie Zickefoose

Marianist Environmental Education Center at Mount St. John , Friday, July 9th, 8:30 – 4 PM

Author and NPR commentator, Julie Zickefoose is a fresh observer of life with her family on their Whipple, Ohio farm and in the larger natural world. Her book, Letters from Eden: A Year at Home, in the Woods evokes the sounds, smells, tastes, and beauty of southeastern Ohio through accessible tales of daily encounters with nature and the seasons. Illustrations ranging from simple pencil journal sketches to sumptuous water colors inspire one to head for the woods, notebook in hand. Julie will share her insights on interpreting nature through writing, drawing, and storytelling at a one day workshop at the Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) at Mount St. John, Friday, July 9th from 8:30 AM till 4 PM.

The Center’s diverse native prairie and wild flower garden provide the perfect peaceful backdrop for participants to experiment with writing and drawing as a means to develop personal skills and to learn to teach others to use journaling to develop language, natural observation, and art skills. If desired, Antioch University Midwest offers one half continuing education credit for the daylong enrichment workshop. Snacks, drinks, and a box lunch are included in the $60 registration fee. To receive credit, participants will submit an additional $65 to Antioch Midwest upon completion of the workshop.

Rain or shine, much of the day will be spent out doors, so participants are advised to dress for the weather. A journal will be provided for each participant.
