TLT to sponsor Local Food event

Food Power, a greater Dayton summit
Will Allen to speak on Nov. 5

Everybody eats. But what you eat really matters. This means many Americans are l ooking for healthier food. At the same time, creating healthy local economies is a huge need. Local growers want to expand their distribution networks in order to capture more local dollars being spent on food. What does it add up to? Come find out at Food Power, a greater Dayton summit on how local growers and eaters can change the economy. The conference will be headlined by Will Allen, a noted urban farmer and community gardening advocate, winner of the MacArthur Genius Award, and Michele Obama’s White House garden coach.

The November 5th conference will pull together innovative growers, food policy advocates, “ farm to school ” pioneers, community gardeners, and food distribution experts. Fairborn High School, near I-675, is hosting the event, organized by Tecumseh Land Trust. After a keynote address b y Mr. Allen about his urban agriculture organization in Milwaukee called Growing Power, there will be breakout sessions on community gardening, food distribution systems and opportunities, how to influence food policy, and much more!

Visit www.tecumsehlandtrust.org to register. Thanks to generous underwriting by the Dayton Foundation, the Food Power registration is only $25; this covers lunch (featuring local food) and snacks. Other sponsors are:

Antioch University Midwest
Clark County OSU Extension
Five Rivers Metropark s
OSU Center for Farmland Policy Innovation

Krista Magaw, Tecumseh Land Trust executive director hopes “everyone goes home November 5th with some inspiring ideas and a business connection or two to follow up on. People in Fairborn are starting a cooperative grocery store after losing theirs. New farmers’ markets are starting all over the Miami Valley. Some amazing things are happening in the world of food and farms. It’s time to bring these efforts together.”
