YSHS football cancellation makes waves

An article in the Xenia Gazette explores the ramifications of the cancellation of this year's football season at YSHS: Student transfer problems, lost revenue for opponents, and the likelihood that Yellow Springs will never again field a team are cited.

Football is one of only a few things that the YS Schools need to take stock of. Perhaps if this had been thought of ahead of time...We have too many clubs, sports and activities for the amount of students that we have and it's time for the administration and maybe a committee from the Community to sit down and decide what to do. Instead of fielding too many things, many not up to any standard at all, it might be good to look at what the school can really do well and keep those activities under the school umbrella. Others could always be done and offered via the community. As a former teacher, I can tell you, the same 15% of the student body are in the same activities and are overworked. It might be good to "farm" some of these things out of the school frame for a change.

Yvonne makes a number of good points. As blashpemous as it may be to some, it IS only football - a game. I do sympathize with the students who were counting on playing, possibly earning scholarships, etc., but surely the school has more important things to focus on? I don't recall ever hearing the same wailing when art or music programs were cancelled in any school.
