CMYS concert to feature reed quintet - Nov. 18

“Five extremely gifted Dutch gents” – in the words of the New York Times – The Calefax Reed Quintet from Amsterdam will travel to Yellow Springs in November for the second Chamber Music Yellow Springs concert.


Sunday, November 18 the Calefax will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Yellow Springs (314 Xenia Avenue). The Calefax consists of Oliver Boekhoorn on oboe, Ivar Berix on clarinet.

Raaf Hekkema on saxophone, Jelte Althuis on bass clarinet and Alban Wesly on bassoon. The Reed Quintet arranges, recomposes, and interprets music for their unique instrument constellation. The concert on November 18 includes works ranging from the 16th to 21st centuries by composers Jan Pieterszn Sweelinck, Maurice Ravel, Graham Fitkin and Mayke Nas. The second half features Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” arranged for reeds by member Raaf Hekkema. The ensemble has played together for twenty-five years and has a worldwide reputation. Their new recording of the “Goldberg Variations” has won accolades from Dutch newspapers. The group will also perform an outreach concert for Yellow Springs schools on Monday, November 19. Concert tickets can be purchased in advance at www.cmys.org or by mail; reservations at 937-374-8800. Individual tickets cost $20 per adult, $7 for students. “Short season” tickets are still available (for $68 adult / $20 student); short season tickets include premiums of a CD recording from last season as well as coupons to local Yellow Springs businesses.
