Fire on Dayton Street - This Saturday

7/15/10 at 2:50 p.m.
The burn down at Rabbit Run Farm scheduled for this Saturday has been canceled due to a permit application glitch and will be rescheduled for a later date. I will let everyone know ASAP when we are rescheduled and will try to give as much notice as possible.

Miami Township Fire-Rescue plans to demolish by burning a structure owned by Vernay Labs and located at 825 Dayton Street on Saturday, July 17. The structure will be burned in a one day training session. The session would consist of a series of small fires being lit and extinguished by firefighters in the morning, followed by a complete burn down of the house in the afternoon. Structural debris will remain to be disposed of by the owner.

Training of this type provides vital experience to our staff of career, part-time and volunteer firefighters. Firefighters will receive training in interior fire attack methods, victim search & rescue, ventilation, water supply, and defensive fire suppression operations. The training will be compliant with all applicable Ohio EPA, Regional Air Pollution Control Agency and National Fire Protection Association regulations & standards. Training of this type requires an inspection and permit from the Ohio EPA.

All furniture and carpeting has been removed from the house. Additionally, the small amount of asbestos that was present has been removed by a licensed contractor. Training fires will be lit using dry straw only; no accelerants will be utilized. During the proposed training, smoke and fire will be visible in the area. The public is invited to observe the session from a designated viewing area.

Our goal is to minimize as much as possible the impact on neighbors and on the environment. This type of live fire training is critical to maintain a well equipped and prepared fire-rescue department.
