Home of the super collider..?
Last week scientists from around the world were applauding the success, finally, of the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider. Building the 19 mile underground circuit near Geneva was an international project involving 30+ countries and 150 or so universities. Essentially, this is a research project designed to race really small things around the circuit in opposite directions and see what comes out in the debris when they smash together.I don’t understand why this is such a big deal. We do this all the time in Yellow Springs. Take any issue, drop it in the middle of town, two sides will soon emerge, race around in opposite directions and very quickly collide at a Village Council meeting for everyone to see on Channel 5.
The super collider in Geneva smashes really small things. We can do that! The dog park was small, so was the left turn lane – how small does it have to be in order to attract some of those research dollars?

What about the fluoride trauma? I'm reminded of Dr. Strangelove when the General tried to overthrow the government because adding fluoride to water was proof of a Communist conspiracy. All I know is a lot of people in this town seem quite elderly with really nice teeth. I'm not going to panic.
Reader, you nailed the reason why Yellow Springs seems to be self-destructing. I don't know why people accept our dysfunctional process, but we clearly have been going round and round the same circular track for a long time now and the debris has piled up. I sure would like to work on changing this dynamic.
I hope your comment inspired others as it did me to really think about what we're doing to each other. I don't think "research" dollars will help us find a better approach to civic affairs. I think sincerely committing to being fair, respectful and intellectually honest in discussing issues would go a long way.
