Raising support for girls golf

A group of parents is trying to get a Y.S. High School girls golf team up and running. There is currently a boys team, but there has never been a separate girls team (there are advantages for the players in having separate teams). For the upcoming school year the girls will be playing with the boys on their team. If they find there's enough momentum to form a girls team the next year, the school may consider forming a separate team. There are some girls who want to play, but don't have clubs (which can be expensive.) They are appealing to the Blog's readers for old clubs they might be willing to donate or sell at below market to benefit these new players. If you can help, please contact Jim Orme at 767-2441. Jim is working with the girls to ready them for the upcoming Fall golf season.

I'm so pleased to hear that the girls are planning to join the boys golf team next year. There has been concern over the future of the golf team for lack of interest for the past couple of years so it will be helpful to have an infusion of new interest and energy from students and parents.

I would like to add a few comments based upon my personal perspective. My son is actually in the interesting position of playing with girls in both of his high school sports, golf and baseball. There were not girls on the YSHS golf team but he played in matches against girls from other teams and found the experience to be enjoyable. When you walk a golf course with a small group, you have the opportunity to really get to know someone so the experience of mixed teams contributes to increased communication and understanding.

Now this year, YSHS is benefitting from 2 incredible young women, Adrianne and Alex Beer, who are playing on the Varsity baseball team because of the inability to field a girls softball team. Again, this is proving to be a positive experience for all and enlightening for the teams we are playing.

What this points out though is the thin line all of our sports are on with regard to resources, both human and financial. Sports are an incredibly important part of the high school experience for many and I daresay contribute to much of the diversity we find in our schools. The beauty of YS sports is that our teams are small allowing students of all levels the ability to play, with the opportunity to shine in a way that they might never have in a larger school. The concern is that many sports are barely hanging on because of too few student athletes. The fact that we're able to put together mixed teams will definitely be beneficial to allowing more sports to continue. Now our son is moving on to college and undoubtedly our connection to Yellow Springs sports will decrease but I encourage parents to work together to increase the interest in this community in organized athletics of all types so that we can continue to offer a full range of experiences and opportunities to the children of this community.
