Starting off right

About three weeks ago, Brody Adkins, age almost 10, a fourth grade student in Ms. Cheryl Lowes’ class at Mills Lawn Elementary, was commenting to one of his teachers that he never seemed to have any of the money that he earns from odd jobs or gets as gifts. The suggestion was made that a savings account might be the solution to the problem.

Well, it seems that Brody took the suggestion to heart, because, last Monday afternoon, Brody and his mother, Tammy Adkins, showed up at The U. S. Bank on the corner of Xenia Avenue and Short Street with 16 crumpled one dollar bills and a Tupperware container with about twenty dollars in uncounted, unrolled pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters inside. Armed with that and a small donation from a friend, Brody opened his first savings account with a balance of $61.29.

His mother, who is an employee of the Yellow Springs High School said, “I am so glad that he decided to start now, so that he can learn the value of money first hand.”

When asked by Amy Lee, the branch manager, what his money saving goal for the year was, Brody quickly replied, “To save up $300.00 in one year by putting more money in my bank account and spending less money in Wal-mart, and then possibly invest a portion of the balance in a company that I will decide on then.”

This writer's opinion, “Way to go Brady, you set a great example for others of all ages to follow. Well done!!!!”
