When: Saturday August 13th, 2011 (Performed during the “Art on the Lawn” show)

Where: Jackson Lytle Funeral Home (grassy area) - Xenia Av. & Limestone Streets in Yellow Springs
Time: 10:30 am -11:10 am

Schedule:
10:30-11:00 a.m. Sitting Meditation to begin promptly. You are welcome to go to the entire event or you can come for part of it. You can meditate the entire time, or you can chill and bask in the peace.
11:00-11:10 Optional sound bath: You can use any mantra or sound, for example, Om, Ah, Ong, Nah or any other sound that calls you personally. If you choose, move closer to one another, donate your physical presence, your positive energy, your voice. It’s also a lot of fun and just sounds awesome to everyone around.
11:10am: End of sitting.

Who: All are welcome. Children, elderly, & anyone in between. This is an event open to everyone, from every path, experienced or not.

What: What IS a “Flashmob”?? It’s an unexpected event that happens in public place in which a large number of people simultaneously break out into a pre-choreographed dance, skit, or pantomime, having the impact of surprise.

However, in our case, our goal is to:

1) To create an environment for people from all walks of life to come together in meditation.
2) To spread awareness of meditation to the public.
3) To come together as a community to send positive intentions out into the world.
4) To show that leading by example is the best way to lead. Simple acts can stimulate major paradigm shifts in thinking.
5) To know we are not alone in our yearning for peace.

This event is modeled after Thich Nhat Hahn’s global event that took place 7/29/11.

Come experience the power of collectively exuding peace and feel the impact we are having on our communities by sitting together, silently radiating happiness and grace in all directions.

What to bring: Please feel free to bring your own cushion/mat/blanket/chair, water if needed, & a positive intention.

If you are a Buddhist, please come. If you are a Christian please come. If you are Jewish, Muslim, or belong to or identify with any other religions, creed, or peace organization, please come. If you are white, brown, black, yellow, red or any other color, please come.

We shall learn together that wrong perceptions of self and others are at the foundation of separation, fear, hate, and violence; and that togetherness and collaboration is possible.”

Outline of Activity- (purposed – feedback welcomed)

• Gong rings 3 times at the beginning.
• Yoga community guides group through three Sun Salutes before sitting
• Guided meditation or soothing background music to be played at a level that is loud
enough to be heard-so people understand a sacred space is being created, yet balanced so that a meditative state is easily established?
• Optional sound bath (10 minutes)
• Gong rings at the End of the sit

It's back - AACW Blues and Jazz Festival

August 25-28

AACW presents the 11th Annual Blues and Jazz festival. The festival will begin at 7:00 pm at Antioch University Midwest, 900 Dayton Street , Yellow Springs , Ohio featuring Blooz ‘n’ Pomes. This will be a poetry open mic open to the public. Poets will be backed by a blues band featuring headliners from the festival. Blooz ‘n’ Pomes will continue until 9:00 pm, and then move to Peach’s Grill, 104 Xenia Avenue starting at 10:00 pm.

On Friday, August 26, the festival will move to the Antioch College Amphitheater on Corry Street in Yellow Springs. There will be a variety of vendors as well as the following performers:

Saturday, August 27 will begin at 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm with a blues workshop hosted by Debbie Davies and Andrew ‘Jr. Boy’ Jones. This will be followed by Innovation Stage performances by a variety of area musicians from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Evening performers include:

The festival will culminate on Sunday August 28 with a Gospel Fest and Basket Meeting. The Gospel Fest will consist of live performances from area gospel artists followed by the Basket Meeting. The Basket Meeting is an old time community tradition similar to a community potluck where participants are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch and socialize.

Growers Exchange To meet

Heartbeat Community Farm at its Swimming Pool Road location will host this month’s Growers Exchange Event on August 13th from 2:00-5:00pm. This location has been operated by Andrew Manieri and Terry Snider for the past six years as an experiment in letting “nature be our teacher, and to honor the diversity of all life”, according to Snider. The learning topic will be no-till gardening and the work project will be mulching and weed management. The Growers Exchange creates a way for seasoned growers to share expertise with novice gardeners about how to grow healthy food.

The monthly events organized by the Growers Exchange are free and open to the interested public. Saturday at Clifton Opera House

On Saturday evening, August 13th toes will be tapping to the Loosely Strung Bluegrass Band. If you like easy going Americana music, bluegrass style.. this is the place to be! The show starts at 7:30pm.

Loosely Strung, a Columbus based band, features crisp, close vocals and harmonies with a 5-string banjo, rhythm guitar, lap steel, manodlin, harmonica, steel-top resonator guitar and an upright bass. Lots of familiar traditional country and bluegrass tunes will be played. You're encouraged to sing along!

The box office opens at 6:30pm. Suggested door donation $7.00. The Clifton Opera House is located at 5 So Clay Street, Clifton 45316. Call 937.342.2175 for more information. The opera house is air conditioned.

Senior Center Vision to be presented

Doug and Ellen Gallow from Lifespan Design Studio in Lebanon will present their vision of the new Senior Center. Feedback from the community is encouraged.

Centerstage Relaunch Party Saturday

Everyone interested in the revival of the Centerstage Community Theater is invited to attend a relaunch party. The event will take place at the Yellow Springs Art Space on Xenia Ave on August 13th, (Saturday) 7:00 to 9:00. Light refreshments and drinks will be served.

Please bring your ideas, favorite plays to consider, skills and enthusiasm. The new Centerstage will not be located at the old location, so this event is to reconnect and find projects that can fit in the community with what is here.

Those interested in participating in a 10-minute play festival this fall are urged to attend.

Street Party Coming to a Block Near You

Don't forget! Yellow Springs Community-Wide Block Party weekend is August 20-21. Contact Joan Chappelle at 767-7056 or Patti Dallas at 767-7884 for details and to find out if your neighborhood already has a coordinator. Don't be shy: it doesn't take much to get the party started. Grab 2 or 3 neighbors to split up the simple basics: pick a time/date and a spot in the street, stick simple invites in mailboxes, fill out the easy form to request the street being blocked off and drop off at YS police station, then let the party unfold. It IS easy being Green---suggest people bring their own table settings!

Friday night at Clifton Opera House

The Shakertown Stompers began in 1999 as a band put together to provide music for a picnic at Kirkmont Presbyterian Church in Beavercreek (on Shakertown Road). Since that time they have played at various retirement centers and senior centers in the community, for weddings, and private parties.

For the past several years they have appeared regularly at the Clifton Opera House, and recently at Lofino Park in Beavercreek. They play predominantly Dixieland- style music with a few surprises thrown in!

The Shakterown Stompers band members are: Ron Mead – trumpet and vocals; Larry Roberts – trombone and vocals; Bob Schwenke – clarinet and vocals; Amy Vaubel – keyboard and vocals; Dave Vaubel – drums; and Gail Vaubel – bass guitar and vocals.

Shakertown will be playing on Friday, August 12th at 7:30pm. The box office opens at 6:30pm. The Clifton Opera House is located at 5 South Clay Street, Clifton; it is air conditioned. Admission is $7.00 Call 937.342.2175 for ticket information.

Watching the Dog

I ask the kid
to watch the dog

a couple hours.
"Take her out back
after an hour or so,
let her pee,
play a little frisbee.
Keep her active!"
When I come back,
he tells me they watched
catoons together
on his computer.
"Did you take her out?"
I ask.
"She likes cartoons,"

he says.
The kid is 21.
Sometimes I feel like
I just want to go to sleep
and not wake up.
I lay down on the couch,
turn on the TV,
look for some golf.
