Dance Piazza tonight

Dance Piazza continues this Saturday at Art Park, 100 Corry Street, 7-10 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m., Orgullo Mexicano will perform and teach Mexican folk dance from the Jalisco region of Mexico. Beginning at 8 p.m., DJ Juju will spin Latin dance tunes and other world dance music. This event is free and open to all ages.

Is football making a comeback?

According to a report in the Springfield News-Sun yesterday, Yellow Springs High School has launched an initiative to bring back football just one year after canceling the program. The plan is to play a junior varsity schedule this season as a prelude to a varsity schedule next fall. According to the article, this year, they’ve had as many as 10 players, and as few as four attend practices. Several players will likely play soccer and football.

The art exhibit, "Synesthesia: Rock 'n Roll Renaissance," featuring concert posters by The Show's guitarist Ryan Henry, is still on display through August 13. Weekend gallery hours are Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery and Exhibition Space is located at 309 Xenia Avenue.

What is the Threshold Choir?

The Threshold Choir singers honor the ancient tradition of singing at the bedsides of people who are nearing the end of life. The voice, as the original human instrument, is a true and gracious vehicle for compassion and comfort. A recent LA Times article describes threshold singers as "creating a veil of tranquil sound for the dying and a balm for the grieving family members around them." Our singing might include rounds, chants, lullabies, hymns, and spirituals.

This weekend retreat will be an immersion into the songs and the spirit and the community of this unique and very rewarding service. Members from 12 different choirs from the Midwest and East Coast attended last year, and all are welcome who, as Kate Munger puts it, "feel the shiver when you hear of this work."

Songwriting Workshop
New This Year!!

In an ongoing effort to give you access to your inner songwriter, Kate is offering this songwriting workshop to Charter Members. It will be a daylong musical odyssey and will provide sessions for exploration, conversation, songwriting, processing feelings, giving and receiving loving feedback. Limited to 12.


"Graduation" for choir members ready to become bedside singers
Sunday morning, 10-12:30

If you have been a member of a choir for at least 6 months, know 50 songs in the cells of your body (no book), and feel that you are prepared emotionally and spiritually to begin singing at bedsides, please consider taking advantage of Kate's presence to "graduate." Simply express this readiness in a conversation with your choir director, and then contact Theresa Horan-Sapunar (yssingers@gmail.com or 937-234-7464), director of the Yellow Springs choir, to be on the list. The ceremony is very simple and sweet and will be explained upon request.

Threshold Choir Directors'/Leadership Meeting with Kate Munger
Sunday, 2-5 PM

Kate realizes there are a number of choir directors in the Midwest who are brimming with questions and would welcome some concentrated time with her regarding the various aspects of leading a Threshold Choir. Bring all those questions and concerns, from musical to organizational to relationship with hospices and nursing homes to internal group dynamics, wherever you need some guidance and support.

This meeting is for women who are directors, those who serve in leadership roles, those who've been sent as representatives from their choir, or those interested in starting a Threshold Choir in their area.


Weekend Retreat registration fee of $30 (to cover hard costs of facility rental and Kate's travel) due by Sept 20. Cancellation with full refund by Sept 25. Late registration is $40.

Note: No woman will be turned away for an inability to pay the $30 registration fee. Please pay what you can afford, or pay an additional amount to help sponsor another participant.

Additional note: You will have an opportunity on the weekend to make a tax- deductible contribution to Kate and Threshold Choir, to show our heartfelt gratitude for the precious gift that she brings us.

When you are part of the choir, you are humbled at the power of the voice and the power of human compassion. Local filmmaker gets state-wide award

"Letters From Frank," a short film by Yellow Springs filmmaker Joanne Caputo about her mother's WWII love letter collection, was selected for a Juror's Choice Award at the 2011 Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition (Short Films). The film is available to view on YouTube.

Saturday at Clifton Opera House

Ragtime River boat Rats

On Saturday evening at 7:30pm , August 6th, the Ragtime River Boat Rats will kick off a night of ragtime. This talented group of musicians will get your toes tapping!

The Ragtime Riverboat Rats dates back to the early 1980's and features music that is fun and has stood the test of time. They present a program reminiscent of the showboat era with good old ragtime music, some Jolson,Americana, and a strong flavor of patriotism. The music and the mood is happy, lively, and toe tapping. They have created a versatile style and repertoire of Ragtime, Dixeland, Jazz,Golden Oldies and Original Songs about love and travel. The show starts at 7:30pm, box office opens at 6:30pm. Public hearing on the Barr property, Aug. 8

The Village has received an application for PUD‐R (Planned Unit Development Residential) approval from Yellow Springs Home, Inc. and Buckeye Community Hope Foundation to develop 37 units of housing for independent seniors aged 55 and older at the property commonly known as the “Barr Property” (321 Xenia Ave.) which is located at the northeast corner of the Xenia Ave./Limestone Street intersection.

A public hearing regarding this proposal will take place on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of the Bryan Center. A copy of the proposal is available here:

Friday night at Clifton Opera House

The well known Country Grass band will be playing at the Clifton Opera House on Friday, August 5th at 7:30pm. This band has been playing together since 1971, and has appeared at the Opera House on numerous occasions. It will be a great night of traditional and modern bluegrass.

The band members are founder Wayne Horsely, lead singer, lead and rhythm guitarist and songwriter. Tom Patrick is the band's bass picker and is one of the finest you will ever hear. Joe Bowsman supplies the tenor and lead vocals, along with a solid mandolin chop and lead. Bottom row from left, Johnny Walker is an accomplished dobroist and furnishes the baritone lines as well as lead vocals. Bob Stacy, on banjo.

The A/C is on and the building is cool for this hot bluegrass group. Box office opens at 6:30pm, suggested door donation $7.00. The opera house is located at 5 So. Clay Street, Clifton.

We note with sadness the passing of Dave Triplett on Sunday. I had the pleasure of playing in the Community Band and Yellow Springs Brass with Dave where he played a fine tube. He was also the tireless organizer of the annual 4th of July Parade and a wonderful husband and father. He will be missed.

Local women's event gets press

Saturday's Simply Women 5k run, conceived by local high school student Paloma Wiggins, got some nice press from the Xenia Daily Gazette this week. In the interview, Paloma mentioned support she received from the Yellow Springs Community Foundation.
